3 mistakes to avoid when designing your living room

The living room is one of the most important spaces in the home. It is where we relax, talk, spend time with family and welcome guests – so it is not simply a room, but a space for connection and shared life.

The living room is one of the most important spaces in the home. It is where we relax, talk, spend time with family and welcome guests – so it is not simply a room, but a space for connection and shared life.

In holistic interior design, we therefore look not only at whether a living room is beautiful and harmonious, but also at how it affects us energetically and psychologically.

From a Feng Shui perspective, there are a few common layout mistakes worth avoiding.

1. ❌ Don’t place the sofa with its back to the entrance

At first, it may seem practical, but it is not an ideal position.

An important Feng Shui principle is that we should be able to see the entrance while sitting in the living room. If the sofa faces away from the door, it can create a vulnerable or exposed position.

Our body may instinctively register that we cannot see what is happening behind us.

Over time, this can reinforce feelings of unease, tension or even a constant state of alertness.

A better solution:
Ideally, the sofa should have solid support behind it – for example, a wall – while allowing those seated on it to see the entrance.

You do not need to arrange everything literally according to Feng Shui rules. The aim is for the space to create a sense of security and support.

2. ❌ What do you place in the eastern area of your home?

In Feng Shui, the eastern area is associated with health, vitality and family relationships.

For this reason, it is especially important to consider what images, objects and symbols are placed here.

For example, it may be worth avoiding photographs of deceased family members in this area, especially if they are given a prominent, central position.

Why?

Because every symbol in a space can carry a message. In the eastern area, it is better to choose images and memories that reinforce:

🌿 life
🌿 health
🌿 vitality
🌿 loving family relationships
🌿 togetherness

Choose family photographs that represent living, harmonious and loving relationships.

The aim is not to deny remembrance or exclude loved ones who have passed away from our lives. Quite the opposite: remembrance can have a meaningful place – just not necessarily in this energetically important area.

3. ❌ Don’t make the TV the focal point of the living room

This is perhaps one of the most common mistakes in modern living rooms.

We walk into the room – and what do we see?

The TV.

We arrange the furniture around it. The sofa faces the screen. Everything is organised around a single point.

From the perspective of Feng Shui and holistic spatial design, however, it is worth asking:

Should the centre of the living room really be what we watch – or the people we are with?

Television brings external stimuli into the space: images, sounds, information, stories and continuous visual stimulation.

That is why I recommend that the main focal point of the living room should not be the screen, but human connection.

Arrange the furniture in a way that supports:

❤️ conversation
❤️ eye contact
❤️ connection
❤️ spending time together
❤️ calm presence

The TV can, of course, be part of the living room. There is no need to banish it.

But do not let it determine how the entire space functions.

🏡 Because the living room is not a cinema.

The living room is a space for being together.

And that makes a huge difference.

✨ Holistic interior design is about much more than this

A home becomes truly personal and supportive when we do not only ask:

“Is this space beautiful?”

but also:

“What does this space support in me?”

In holistic interior design, form, function, Feng Shui, the energy of the space and human needs all come together as one system.
